"Roseanne" star's Tweet causes Controversial End to Show
On Tuesday, May 29, the reboot of the classic TV show "Roseanne" was abruptly canceled due to what many perceived to be a racist tweet made by the show's star Roseanne Barr.
The tweet itself read as "muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby = vj" which was directed at former senior advisor to Obama and African American women, Valerie Jarret. Considering that most people would generally consider comparing any person of color to a monkey or primate racist, it's pretty fair to consider Barr's tweet to be racist though there are people who would disagree.
Due to the tweet, ABC has officially cancelled "Roseanne," bringing an end to the widely successful reboot. This abrupt cancellation has caused cast members to express disappointment in the situation and their former co-worker though many viewers are confused as to why the show was cancelled due to a single racist tweet.
The unfortunate truth is that this isn't the first time Barr has been publicly controversial with one of the most notable examples being her disrespectful singing of the national anthem. With that in mind, it should be noted that anything posted or publicly said regardless of past and present can be used against you later especially in our recent social media climate where people are willing and able to bring find and bring attention to what was said.
While many might cite freedom of speech as another defense in situations similar to this, it should still be noted that just because you have the right to say things doesn't mean you are completely free of consequences. In the case of Roseanne, her tweets don't align with the ABC's views and agenda which resulted in her show's cancellation.
It's unfortunate that Barr's co-workers are also paying for Roseanne's twitter joke, but the fact that the star who's name is shared with the the title of the sitcom means that they really couldn't do the show without her.
