Netflix Favorites-"Dear White People"

"Dear White People" is a Netflix original show based on a movie of the same name (both of which were created by Justin Simien) that dives into the lives of African American students of an ivy league college.

Despite the fact that the title of this show has caused backlash, due to people thinking it to be a race-baiting title, the show deals with a variety of racial issues like the black lives matter movement, blackface, the different forms of racism and stereotyping, gender rolls, among other issues from a variety different perspectives. "Dear White People" is not aimed to insult white people but to show people of all races and nationalities can watch and come away with a new perspective on social and political issues that they might not have had before watching the show. The show is on it's second, and is filled with witty dialogue and interesting characters that anyone can relate. "Dear White People is worth the binge watch as anyone can find something enjoyable about it.

    Hi Sarah!

    I really like this post and your blog topic in general because everyone needs a good movie or TV show to watch once in awhile and your blog offers it's viewers a great understanding as to what different shows and movies are all about. "Dear White People" seems really interesting to me and I may even watch it now that I know what it is about. I can see how some people may think the title is race-baiting but I also think it's eye catching and makes the show seem even more intriguing. Thank you for giving a glimpse into what this show is about!

    I think that this blog has some great potential! There are so many movies and shows coming out, or ones that have already been released, that would be good candidates for reviews! I appreciate that you didn't shy away from a more controversial show. My only suggestion is to touch up on your blog layout because the setup is really awkward. Other than that, great job and I look forward to reading more reviews!

    Great idea for a blog. I have seen practically everything on Netflix but I have not seen this yet. Based on your recommendation to binge, I will probably start it this week. Thanks and I'll stay tuned.

    Hi Sarah!

    I think this is a great idea for a blog. I am a broadcast and cinematic arts major at CMU so I will be checking in with your blog since I am studying a lot of topics regarding film and television. :) I think this is a great first post!! I am intrigued and now I want to watch it. I am working at a national news organization this summer and I am always looking for more cultural documentaries/series so I can learn more about the issues that are important in today's society. This has been a great recommendation and I look forward to checking it out on Netflix!

Predominantly female casts in movies isn't a new concept as seen in films like "Mean Girls," "Pitch Perfect," "Wonder Woman," "Girls Trip" and "Bridesmaids."
